About

History

The original Redwoods Valley covered an area generally bounded by Waimea river in the east, Upper Moutere in the West, to the north side of SH 60 (not including Rabbit Island) and south to the end of Golden Hills Road. Henry Redwoods settled in the area ( Originally known as Waimea South) and is buried at St Peter and Paul Church, Cnr. Waimea West Rd and Moutere Highway.

A branch school of Appleby was built in 1887 at the foot of the Moutere Hill and bought by the RVSS (1931) as it was to be closed due to a new school being built in Upper Moutere. It was subsequently kept in use for younger students until 1961.

It became a much-used facility by the community with a commemorative celebration held in 1987 (100yrs) and 125yrs in 2013.

There has been significant change of residents in the area over time. Input from people such as the Maisey family, of Maisey Road, Bright's of Redwood Valley Rd. and others who grew up in the area has changed with time. As happens with all organisations, changes of committee and local demographics has had an impact on use of the hall.
